4 Things To Consider When Choosing a Location for Your Portrait Session

So you hired the perfect photographer (hopefully me!) and now it’s time to decide where to have your photos taken. Seems simple enough, right?! There is no ‘right or wrong’ location — as I’ve said before, it’s really about finding the nice light at whatever location you or the photographer chooses (and that’s my job!)

There are a few things, though, that you might want to consider before choosing a location.

1. What do you plan on wearing for your session? You want to match your clothing to your location. I don’t mean wear green in the middle of a green field. Instead you might want to wear soft, neutral colors if you are wanting open-field-at-sunset type of pictures. Or if you are wanting more of a casual cool vibe, with a pop of color, then pictures in an urban setting might be more your style. I personally love a variety of locations, but urban locations just might take the cake for me because I love all the color and the variety of photos you can take in an urban setting.

2. Especially if you plan on displaying these pictures on a wall in your home, think about the colors and vibe in your home. What will look best in your home, photos with an urban feel or nature feel? Fall colors or spring/summer colors?

3. Where will you and your family feel most comfortable and have the most fun? In a park, field, nature area, and/or urban setting?

4. The last thing to consider, which may or may not be super important to you, is to think about choosing a location that is special to you and your family. If your kids were born and raised in a certain town, why not have pictures taken at a special park or downtown area that you (currently or used to) go to all the time? It’s nice to look back on photos and have special memories of not only that time in your life, but special memories of the location also.

This family loves to golf! So a golf course was a perfect backdrop for their session.
